Description

The Orvis Safe Passage Sling Pack is designed to pack all the fishing gear in one bag. The product is an upgrade to the previous sling pack and comes with some additional features.

The features in the sling pack are placed very thoughtfully. For example, there is a water bottle holder that you can access without the need to turn your backpack forward. Once the sling pack comes to the front side, a simple work surface is given to change the flies. There is a fly patch on the right side keeping flies ready and hook link storage is easily accessible.

There are three zippered pockets and eight separate compartments given in the sling pack. All inner pockets are made of light-colored nylon, which makes it easy to spot fallen flies. The second compartment uses an innovative method of attaching zingers that prevents these accessories from getting in the way from the outside of the pack. Hook the retractor inside, then pass the tool through a slot that allows you to pull it out to reach from the outside.

The chest strap even offers a handy way to hold a hemostat (a magnetic snap lets you pull it out of your pocket with one hand). But like most slings, there’s no practical place to hang a hammock – clipping it to your belt is the best option.

The padded shoulder strap is given to distribute the weight well (that never exceeds 6 pounds, given the pack’s modest carrying capacity) and is comfortable for multi-hour fishing sessions.

The shoulder and side straps are adjustable, but the Orvis Safe Passage Sling Pack is best suited for medium and large builds.

The molded foam back panel isn’t the windiest system, but the small pack size limits moisture to a very small area. We found the vent perfectly suited to hot weather fishing.

The bottom of the backpack is made of waterproof fabric, so a quick dip later won’t take hours to dry your gear. However, there is no waterproof pocket to store a phone, but a Velcro strap paired with Orvis’ $12 waterproof case is sold separately).

With a 10.5 litre capacity the sling pack 2016 is big enough for everything most anglers need for a river lunch break: a few boxes of flies, a granola bar and a pair of sunglasses. It fits in an ultra-light, compact raincoat, but bulky models run out of capacity
