Fly Fishing Outfitters has been The Vail valley’s original year-round outfitter since 1992.
Orvis-Endorsed Guides
Our Orvis endorsed guide staff has over 300 years combined experience guiding local waters; not only are they world-class fishing guides, they’re also world-class ski guides. They know the snow as well as they know the river, which means they bring expertise to the fly fishing community, unlike most other summer-only guides.
Spring Fly Fishing: Combine Skiing and Fly Fishing
Spring Fly Fishing in the heart of Ski country is quite simply “fantastic.” The warmer longer days, beginning in around mid-February, start to warm the rivers and that kicks the Trout’s metabolism into high gear. The extended days are also what gets the aquatic insects to begin to move around much more, meaning more available food. The late Winter-Spring time is also the start of some very good dry fly fishing. There is an abundance of larger Midges and the Blue Winged Olive’s start hatching very regularly from late morning until sunset. An afternoon wade trip after a morning on the mountain makes for the perfect Colorado experience. Wade and float fishing are both available every day of the week. If you are a die hard Streamer fanatic, then this time of year is when you want to be on our rivers.
We start our float season in earnest this time of year. The Colorado, Roaring Fork and Eagle Rivers are all excellent Fly fishing destinations this time of year. The pre-runoff Caddis hatch known as the “Mother’s Day” hatch can be some of the best dry fly fishing of the whole year!!!
We also guide many of the area’s great little creeks and streams as well as lakes and ponds.
Beyond our winter fly fishing expertise, our winter guided trips are also offered at some of the best rates than any other time of the year. Winter fly fishing trips are discounted off our summer rates! That’s right, you not only get to enjoy the Colorado snow, but you can take advantage of professionally guided half and full-day wade and float trips on the pristine Eagle River, Roaring Fork River, and Colorado River.
